Direction over detection

performance fuel + 100 sensors

1 min readZi Wang
Intent

longevity fails at direction, not at measurement. dense bio-sensors or build AI-native applications

Signal

Detection is a hardware problem the FDA can stall. Direction is a software problem AI can solve. The binding constraint is interpretation, so cheap agents that infer from a handful of signals beat dense sensor stacks waiting for clearance.

Question

If a sensor-dense wearable is already technically feasible, what makes interpretation, not more data, the thing that keeps people from "living to die"?

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ longevity funds: funds w/ vintage of 2010s: biotech + ageing related research (targeting NIH government research grants, university lab (e.g. Sinclair, Charles River, Ana Maria Cuervo, Altos Lab). 10+ years timeline (slow), narrow niche (brittle), subpar IRR.

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Demis (Google Deep Mind) Youtube, high conviction ideas: 1). Multimodality (10x understanding) 2). World models (simulation = coherent reasoning & exploration) 3). Scientific method in AI (rigorous hypothesis testing) 4). Jagged intelligence (uneven ai capabilities across domains) 5). Scaling laws (empirical rules balancing model size, data, compute (i.e. Chinchilla ai) 6. Agentic system (reliability for decision making) 7. Best case scenario is radical abundance, solving energy, disease, materials: humanity flourishing & traveling to the stars. your thoughts on multimodal understanding of video & images to 10x ai capabilities (awareness)?

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Fueling for peak performance: Maurten Hydrogel Tech & bicarbonate supplementation system for sustained power & endurance (2+ hours). pH-sensitive gelation, liquid drink transforms into gel when it hits the stomach's acidic environment. Gel encapsulates bicarbs, reducing GI distress and delivers steady energy w/o blood sugar spikes. in the context of hey tea + therabody + 10ยฒ, delivering a "super class" of healthy boba tea.

  • No more heavy meals for carb-loading, less calories, more carb.
  • powder with hydrogel boba.

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ YES, a sensor explosion is real and happening in front of us. ~60 of these sensors have been validated in labs, lactate, ketones, cortisol, hydration, electrolytes, skin metabolites, breath chemistry, so it is technically feasible from a hardware standpoint, especially if we have 24 - 36 months of r&d, within the realm of startup timetable for a sensor-dense wearable. Especially, w/ AI, we can start to make sense of all the data & patterns. BUTโ€ฆ

  • ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ most of these need FDA clearance, and the government doesn't seem to know the delta between wellness and clinical (painfully similar to digital asset regulation 5+ years ago). Legal battle is a no go for the early stage. Whoop FDA hell w/ their MG band (ECG & blood-pressure).
  • ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Option A, role the dice, work hard to make a breakthrough in chemical/bio sensors and fight FDA to the hell or Option B, build an AI-native longevity software business: $10B rev, 100M customers, $100/annual sub.

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ fundamentally, a few of my 10/10 convictions (no hedging, no parallel bets, no excuse, willing to be deadwrong) are:

  • Longevity isn't broken at detection, it's broken at direction. Meaning, people aren't dying or living unhealthy from lack of lab tests, they are living to die b/c there is no direction and HOLD-by-neck intervention.
  • We can fix it, if everyone can have a team of dedicated doctors, fitness trainers, nutritionistsโ€ฆ just like BJ, โ† AI agents (i still have similar parallel dream that if Uber gave everyone a private driver, then why can't we give everyone concierge doctors on the cheap ($100/yr)?
  • Ground Truth between z & s โ€” aversion of too many tests, too many wearablesโ€ฆ we both need better AI interpretation.
  • Battle tested, longevity can't be done solo styleโ€ฆ the early days w/ you & Li made all the differences (think July/August).

  • ๐Ÿ€ hence, what to avoid for us: basic science research, drug discovery, government..

  • ๐Ÿ€ multimodal: ai (muscle) trainer.

  • ๐Ÿ€ agent: ai (grocery) shopper.

  • ๐Ÿ€ deductive: ai (biochem) adviser.

  • ๐Ÿ€ my dark maple syrup + coconut water + himalayan salt + lemon are great so far โ€“ similar to carb fuel + acid buffering with maurten hydrogel + bicarb. for buffering: arugula, pickled plums, chicken breast help, too.

  • ๐Ÿ€ i bought huge boxes of bryan johnson's and david protein bars. really hate the taste, the mouth feel, all packaged food.

๐Ÿ€ our whoop ultra: pack 100 sensors for $100, 10 grams, 10-day battery.

  • ๐Ÿ€ exactly; what about just an ecosystem fund or a kickstarter platform for health / fitness wearables?

  • ๐Ÿ€ definitely no (fda) fight for the first _ years. but the tradeoffs can be smart: pack as many sensors in an integrated chip / puck, then let partners accessorize the wearables โ€“ like fitbit flex 2.

  • ๐Ÿ€ in parallel, our ai can infer most (from even a handful of basic sensors) โ€“ per "sensor on a bracelet" below.

  • ๐Ÿ€ yes, per "atomic lifestyle" below.

  • ๐Ÿ€ yes, per "persistent agents" below.

  • ๐Ÿ€ yes, per "deductive advice" below.

  • ๐Ÿ€ yes, per "blue social" below.
